New Year, New Home

Getting your home readying for the New Year can be an activity that brings people some mixed emotions. It is so nice to have a clean home, but where in the world did I get all this stuff?!? The New Year is often a time we reflect on how we want our lives to look and how to materialize the life which we desire. New Year, New You. Right? Well since I’m an Interior Designer, I’m making it New Year, New Home!

Getting your home ready for the New Year can be an activity that brings people some mixed emotions. It is so nice to have a clean home, but where in the world did I get all this stuff?!? The New Year is often a time we reflect on how we want our lives to look and how to materialize the life which we desire. New Year, New You. Right? Well since I’m an Interior Designer, I’m making it New Year, New Home!

But, honestly, that sounds a bit overwhelming and most people end up giving up on reaching their New Year’s goals and resolutions because they get overwhelmed. That being said, I have decided to keep it simple. Simple changes can lead to long-term results. Here is a list of items that I am using this year to simplify my life and rejuvenate my home.

Step 1 – Let’s Get Clean

Washcloths and Dishrags: Switch to something reusable. You will save money over the long run by not buying as many paper towels and it’s a more eco-friendly way of cleaning. It’s a win-win.

Mesh Laundry Bags: These are a lifesaver! I use mine all the time in the laundry for my delicates, bras, and small items that I want to make sure don’t get caught on anything in the wash. Correctly laundering your clothes will help them last; reducing wear and damage. And the BIG plus, you will save so much money not having to replace clothes.

Fleece Refills for Swiffer Hand Duster: No one wants to dust. It’s a tedious task that has to be done. Most of us have a Swiffer wand for dusting. Ever since they have come on the market, they have become a must buy cleaning accessory for anyone moving into a new home, apartment etc. Problem is that the refills can get pretty pricey if you buy they on a regular basis. But these are a life changer. Fleece natural attracts static and the static is what attracts the dust onto the Swiffer cleaners. Instead of buying boxes and boxes and wasting time and money with the refills, pick yourself up a pack of these and make cleaning easy.

Organizing Doesn’t Have to Be Hard

Bamboo Silverware Drawer Organizer Kitchen: I hate having a drawer full of utensils that are all over the place. Drawer organizers are a must in the kitchen. If you don’t get anything else for your kitchen, get one of these. I love the ones like this one here that are expandable to fit different size drawers. Having an organized kitchen is a snowball. The easier it is to use your kitchen, the more likely you will be to actually cook at home which will save you so much money in the long run.

Kitchen Canisters Ceramic Food Storage Jar: Canisters can be a more difficult thing for people to adapt into their kitchen routines. Organizers love them but they take work to keep full with whatever those organizers tell you should be in there. But I urge you to think of them differently. A. Get ones you think are pretty, or you won’t use them. I like this set because they come in so many colors that you can certainly find one to match your kitchen. B. Use them for items you use on a regular basis. I.E. Coffee ground or bean, Sugar or Chocolate Covered Almonds. They will be easier to adapt to if they hold items that you go through on a regular basis.

Let There be Light

Lighting is Essential.

It can change the mood of your home so quickly and so dramatically. This is such a basic step to getting you off on the right track for a New Home.

Solomon’s Seal Table Lamp: Dedicated lighting to different tasks can help your mood, productivity, and sleep. All essential for a New Home in the New Year. Reduce harsh light in the bedroom by using smaller table lamps on your nightstands. Use lamp shades with darker fabrics to direct lighting away from your eyes in bed.

Smart Light Bulbs: If you have access to this technology, even if it’s just adjusting the bulbs through an app on your smartphone, I highly recommend it. Especially in spaces where you need to adjust your mood, i.e. bedroom to get ready for bed or waking up in the morning. I have my lights set so that they are warm and soft in the evening as I wind down for bed and they turn on in the morning to help me wake up when all I want to do is hit the snooze button.

As you are starting your journey into remaking your home, the items listed above can help you on your journey. Small steps are key in adjusting your home to the way that you want it, to a way that helps you reach your life goals.
