My Inspiration for Get Rid of Things: Hoarders

After recently moving back in with my parents I have been faced with the fact that I have a lot of stuff. For the past couple months prior to the move I realized with each passing day that over my past 32 years I have acquired a lot of things. Some things are precious and I will never get rid of yet others I have no idea how I got them or why. I have already told you about Thread-Up and how I have paired down my wardrobe drastically. Not only did this help me with my move but it also gave me some much needed extra money.

Now that I have moved I have realized there is a significant amount of items that I left at my parents house when I originally moved out that just add to the original amount of things I have been working on pairing down. Along with my childhood hoard I have noticed a similar trend with my sisters stuff and my parents. So I have decided to sell as much as I possibly can on Ebay and Mercari for starters.

It is a very trying process, and can be very discouraging at times but I have found my motivation: Hoarders!

The tv show Hoarders is hard to watch at times. These people have some serious mental illnesses and have a desperate need to hold onto things, and useless things. I remember listening to The Minimalists on their podcast about hoarding and trying to place myself in a category. I do not think that I am a hoarder but a pack rat, yes, 100%.

So how does Hoarders give me motivation? I never ever want to end up in that position myself. Either as one of the hoarders or as a family member of a hoarder. I find that each time I put on an episode, I go through a little bit of my stuff and I always list something in my Ebay store and throw something out. Actually I tend to do multiple of both actions.

The only thing that I find bothers me when I watch the show is that so much gets thrown away that could have been reused or donated or repurposed that has to be thrown away because they were ruined by neglect. After my heart sinks, I refocus my thoughts and look toward the items I have and how they can be put to good use before they too are ruined by neglect.

So if you need a little extra motivation, try watching an episode of hoarders and see if it inspires you to get rid of some stuff!
